The Baillie Gifford Prize Podcast – The 2019 Shortlist

Listen to the shortlist episode of our podcast featuring Dr Xand van Tulleken and Dr Myriam Francois

In this shortlist episode, our podcast host, Razia Iqbal, is joined by judges Dr Xand van Tulleken and Dr Myriam Francois to discuss the six chosen titles and how reading such a volume of different books is both challenging and enlightening. We also speak to book vlogger Olive Fellows about her reading initiative Non-Fiction November.

Four of the six titles bring women’s lives to the fore and two books highlight major twentieth century figures.  The shortlist explores everything from racial politics and community secrets to iconic figures and powerful ideologies.

Watch a short clip of the judges discussing the shortlist here.

The next podcast episode will focus on the 21st winner of the 2019 Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction, to be announced on 19 November. You can watch the winner ceremony livestreamed on Facebook.

The podcast and awards ceremony are generously supported by the Blavatnik Family Foundation.

Join us on 18 November at Waterstones, Tottenham Court Road for readings and discussion with our shortlisted authors, in an event hosted by the BBC’s Razia Iqbal. Tickets available here.
