The Blavatnik US-Israel Scientific Forum on Genome Medicine Over a Human Lifetime

The 5th Blavatnik U.S.-Israel Scientific Forum: Genome Medicine Over a Human Lifetime, held October 22–23, 2025 in Washington, DC, brought leading researchers from the United States and Israel together to explore how advances in genomics are transforming human health across the lifespan—from the genetics of complex traits and neurodevelopmental disorders to cancer genomics, AI-driven genome analysis, genome stability, and emerging therapies for single-gene diseases. Through keynote talks, scientific sessions, and panel discussions, participants highlighted cutting-edge discoveries and their translation into precision medicine and public health. Hosted by the National Academy of Sciences and the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities, the Forum reflects the Blavatnik Family Foundation’s support for binational scientific cooperation and joint innovation between the two countries.

America’s Pastime Gets Even Better

The Blavatnik Family Foundation-supported Lighthouse Guild's adaptive baseball team has been featured in CNN's 5 Good Things! Baseball is the greatest sport. Have you heard of the US Blind Baseball Association, a league for legally blind athletes who love the game? It's come up with an ingenious way to make baseball accessible: A player holds their own ball and tosses it up to hit. The balls contain several chimes so players can always hear them, and the bases make beeping noises to guide them in. Even without vision, these players are smacking the ball deep into the outfield and sprinting around the diamond. For the full edition of this story, head to CNN All Access.

Kranzusch Wins Major Award

Philip J. Kranzusch, a professor at Harvard Medical School and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, has been named as a laureate for the Blavatnik National Award for Young Scientists. Kranzusch was one of three laureates announced at a ceremony at the American Museum of Natural History in New York last month. The Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists honor outstanding contributions by researchers aged 42 and younger in the United States in the Life Sciences, Chemical Sciences, and Physical Sciences and Engineering. Kranzusch was recognized for discoveries made by his lab, which reveal how core components of the human immune system descended from ancient proteins that first evolved in bacteria billions of years ago. These proteins inhibit the replication of bacteriophages (known informally as phages), or viruses within bacteria. The work provides insights into host-virus interactions throughout all kingdoms of life.
