Len Blavatnik: Family Offices ‘Should Invest’ to Power Growth of UK Life Sciences Sector

Philanthropists and family offices have a vital role to play by seizing the high-risk, high-reward opportunities that can lead to groundbreaking innovation, said Sir Leonard Blavatnik. Family offices are ideally placed to power the next generation of British biotech and life sciences companies, according to Sir Leonard Blavatnik. ‘Family offices should invest,’ said Sir Leonard, speaking exclusively to Spear’s at Kensington Palace, the venue for a gala dinner where the winners of the Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists in the United Kingdom were announced last week.

Blavatnik Therapeutics Challenge Awards Fuel Translational Research

Three research teams have been selected as recipients of the 2024 Blavatnik Therapeutics Challenge Awards, an annual awards program that aims to progress promising discovery science at Harvard Medical School toward the creation of new medicines that could be life-changing for patients. Now in its fifth and concluding year, the Blavatnik Therapeutics Challenge Awards have supported 20 research projects. Of the 17 projects awarded in the first 4 years of the program, four have already progressed to either the founding of a new company or licensing of the technology as part of a start-up. Two additional projects may enter clinical trials within the next year.

Blavatnik Fund for Innovation at Yale to Support 15 Breakthrough Interventions in Cardiometabolic, Autoimmunity, Dermatology, and Oncology, and More

Since 2017, Yale and the Blavatnik Family Foundation have partnered to propel promising research beyond the university walls, bridging the gap between discovery and real-world application. Through the Blavatnik Fund for Innovation at Yale, a $65 million accelerator fund managed by Yale Ventures, 90 unique projects have led to 23 startups, 4 acquisitions, nine investigational new drug (IND) clearances, and work across diverse therapeutic modalities. This year’s fifteen awardees continue that legacy, tackling some of the most urgent life science challenges with projects spanning novel therapeutics to AI-powered medical solutions.

Small Harvard Start-Up Launches to Fight Huge Problem of Antimicrobial Resistance

North Carolina biotech Kinvard Bio launched on Monday with a mission to develop next-generation drugs that can combat rising “superbugs.” Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the World Health Organization’s top public health concerns globally, claiming nearly 5 million lives per year. Kinvard’s launch on Monday was backed by the venture investment firm Kineticos Life Sciences, while much of the scientific groundwork done at Harvard was supported by the Blavatnik Biomedical Accelerator and the Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria Biopharmaceutical Accelerator (CARB-X).

Israeli-American Scientist, Who Won Top US Research Prize, Credits Her Jewish Identity for Her Resilience

Cigall Kadoch was inspired to become a medical researcher as a teenager when her caretaker, whom she saw as a mentor, got sick and died suddenly. Kadoch not only trained as a medical researcher—in college at the University of California, Berkeley and then a doctorate in cancer biology from Stanford School of Medicine—but after establishing her own lab, at age 28, in 2014, she is “one of the youngest scientists ever appointed to the Harvard Medical School faculty,” per her Dana-Farber bio. Last month, she landed one of the most prestigious scientific awards in the United States, the 2024 Blavatnik National Awards for Young Scientists. She credits much of her success, and her outlook, to her Jewish identity.
