An Empire of Splendor: What to Expect at ‘The Great Mughals’ in London

Shah Jahan, his father Jahangir and his grandfather Akbar were the Great Mughals, the early emperors of the mighty Mughal dynasty that sprawled across the Indian subcontinent (that then included Pakistan, Nepal, Afghanistan and Bangladesh) and ruled from 1526 until 1858. The emperors’ elevation from mere garden variety Mughals to greatness comes from their patronage of beautiful things, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London’s “The Great Mughals: Art, Architecture and Opulence” exhibition applauds the trio’s creative and cultural achievements. Question 7 by Richard Flanagan is tonight named winner of the Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction 2024. The winner was announced by Chair of Judges, Isabel Hilton, at a ceremony hosted in London and generously supported by The Blavatnik Family Foundation. The announcement was streamed to readers around the world via the Baillie Gifford Prize social media channels. With his win, Flanagan becomes the first author to ‘win the double’ of the Booker Prize for Fiction and the Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction.

Codes of Royal Fashion Explored in New Exhibition at Kensington Palace

A host of never-before-seen royal fashion treasures are set to go on show at Kensington Palace as part of a new exhibition, Dress Codes, due to open in March 2025. Showcasing both instantly recognisable and rarely seen highlights from the Royal Ceremonial Dress Collection, the display will explore the codes and conventions of royal clothing, and the powerful impact fashion can make when boundaries are pushed and dress codes evolve.

Huge David Bowie Archive Collection to Go on Show at New V&A East Museum in London

It comes after the V&A announced it had secured the archive last year, with the support of the singer’s estate, the Blavatnik Family Foundation and Warner Music Group. The David Bowie Centre will open at the museum’s East Storehouse in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on September 13 2025, featuring more than 90,000 items from throughout the late music icon’s career.

The Baillie Gifford Prize Announces 2024 shortlist

Rachel Clarke, Richard Flanagan, Annie Jacobsen, Viet Thanh Nguyen, Sue Prideaux and David Van Reybrouck are today, Thursday 10 October, announced as the six authors shortlisted for the Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction 2024. The shortlist was announced this evening by 2024 prize judge, Peter Hoskin, at an event at Cheltenham Literature Festival. The winner will be announced on Tuesday 19 November at an award ceremony generously supported by the Blavatnik Family Foundation.
